Dedication, well i hope that game comes to you one day Hawk. Im still surprised why some of you are surprised about how long its taken, i for one say this is pretty short for developing a game

exactly. same case as diablo 2 and diablo 3. you think people aren't going to be interested in guild wars 2 because not as many people play guild wars anymore?

Most players have worn the game out, there is nothing exciting left to do, there are only so many ways you can spin the same content, before you start losing your player base to new games.

There will be plenty of players for Guild Wars 2, and how many people keep playing Guild Wars 1 has no bearing what-so-ever on GW2 sales.

Agreed, just because people aren't playing GW1 doesn't mean they have lost interest in GW2 aswell.

For GW2 is "how many boxes they will sell". Hence the current player base is extremely important because of two reasons:

For GW2 it's all about their current/previous players. If they don't buy it and advertise it, there are slim chances that random people that never heard of GW would care about a sequel called GW2.

True everybody's money is worth the same amount, but from a pure marketing standpoint new players are more important than old players in just about any game.

Reason being Anet is guaranteed a certain amount of old players buying the game and a certain number of old players not buying the game. If they only have this amount of sales the game will not be considered a success. The game is only a success if they get a significant amount of new players to make up for the old players who will not buy. Not to mention they need to surpass the sales of GW1, and they can only do that with new players.

The GW population will dwindle over the next year. Any game has a shelf life, and lets face it the game is 4 and a half years old at present, and has had a pretty good run.
It is likely to gain, or re-gain, players nearer to GW2's release, once existing players find out what effect their current characters will have on the new game, old players get reminded by the new game's marketing of that old MMO they used to enjoy, and new punters decide to find out a bit about the new game by looking back at the previous one.

Yes, but it's on reasonably good sources. I have used IGN to track alot of games over the last 3 - 4 years, they are pretty good

Besides confirming there's no 2010 release though, it doesn't mean much. The beta for example they could start any time they want... and it will probably be very close to release from what they've said. So it might not even be next year either.

Im hoping for some bonus missions when the books come out, to actually play a couple of exciting chapters of the book (written) in the game ... other then that im basically filling my HoM and working on titles, not sure howlong that will keep me interested though, i was hoping on a long beta way b4 release and the trailer got me all hyped, with the recent news this has been a bit of a bummer tbh... ohwell, i guess i can always do 'the waiting game'...

hMMM... I'm just coming back to GW after about a year break. I never did really push my assassin toon very far in any campaign and the challenge of doing so seems to have piqued my interest.

But I concede that i'm probably a minority.

I feel a minority in that respect too. I have spent little time actually playing the game in it's entirety and am enjoying trying to finish some of the campaignes

In my opinion, it's quite apparent they are not going to release any new content for GW1. Ever. It's done. Move along...

I would rather that they announce *that*, so all of these hopelessly hopeful players get over the fact that they have everything that they will ever have.

Either play the game and enjoy it for what it is, or find another game to amuse yourself.

Anyway, the notion of releasing new content to keep current players entertained is ludicrous. It will never be enough to "tide people over" until GW2 comes out, so it would be tantamount to "stringing them along," causing more whiner threads, like this one, asking for even more content to keep them entertained. What volume of content would be enough? That would be a whole game's worth, and that, I believe, is called "Guild Wars 2"...

It's done. Move along...
